If you haven’t started watching Dragon Ball Super yet or haven’t seen the latest episode BEWARE! SPOILERS BELOW!
Now to the main discussion, do Super Saiyan and Power levels matter anymore? In the latest episode of Dragon Ball Super, the Saiyans from Universe 6 seemed to have mastered the Super Saiyan transformation quite easily. So much so that it makes our heroes from Universe 7’s accomplishments of achieving Super Saiyan and beyond rather meaningless and a complete after thought.
Lets take it back for a brief minute, Goku’s transformation into a Super Saiyan took the death of his best friend by the hand of the Tyrannous Emperor Frieza. Vegeta had to go to a far away planet during a meteor shower which almost resulted in his death for him to become a Super Saiyan. Although one can make the argument that Goten and Trunks were able to achieve Super Saiyan at a very young age rather effortlessly, you might attribute that to genetics of Goku and Vegeta. That was the argument in the past but now not so much.
The Universe 6 Saiayns have not only achieved the power of Super Saiyan but have also gone beyond. Cabba transformed with the help of Vegeta during the Universe 6 and 7 tournament. Meanwhile, Caulifla has mastered Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 in one episode and Kale has transformed into a Broly’esk Legendary Super Saiyan.
These Saiyans’ transformations seem all but too convenient for the sake of the Tournament of Power. Though I understand completely as to why. You can’t have Saiyans in this tournament who can’t achieve Super Saiyan power and expect them to compete with all of the fighters from other universes.
In the Saiyans’ from Universe 6 you can argue that back then there wasn’t anyone to tell Goku or Vegeta how to transform, they pretty much had to get angry and do it on their own. Unlike the Sayains’ from Universe 6, Goku and Vegeta gave the new Saiyans a guideline for achieving the golden form. Which in the end helped them gain immense power in a short amount of time.
If it stopped there at the transformations I don’t think most of the fan base would have a problem, but unfortunately that’s not the case. It seems as if Dragon Ball Super is erasing the power levels right in front of our eyes. When Kale turned into the Legendary Super Saiyan, Goku fired a Kamehameha directly at her while in his Super Saiyan blue form and she literally walked through it like it was nothing.
From everything that we have seen, there is no way that she should have been able to do that regardless of her legendary transformation. At the end of the day, regardless if it is the Legendary Super Saiyan form, she still is just a Super Saiyan.
Android 17 was able to keep up with Goku in his Super Sayain blue form as well. This makes no sense when Cell -who absorbed the androids and who was also stronger than them – was defeated by Gohan in his Super Saiyan 2 form.
Now as we all know, this is just a set up to make Goku’s and Vegeta’s next transformation as strong and as meaningful as possible. That said, I can’t argue that the way they are going about it could have been handled better.
Regardless of the problems with Dragon Ball Super, the show itself is still very enjoyable and brings back memories of the old days. Every week brings the constant action and laughs along with Ki blast flying over the arena and just seeing the heroes battle it out once again to survive. It feels just like old times though a bit darker.
Needless to say, I still enjoy the show and the nuances of the power levels along with easy transformations shouldn’t stop you from enjoying whats to come.
