This weekend was all about the newest DC movie. Wonder Woman was released to not only record breaking numbers, the movie scored a certified score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the first of the recent DC Comics movies to get that kind of recognition from critics.
Wonder Woman grossed $100 million in domestic sales during the opening weekend. Compared to the other three most recent DC movies it has had the lowest opening. Yet it is the only one to get a great score from the critics. In the foreign market the movie grossed $122 million so far, bringing the total up to $223 million worldwide. This film has set the record for the highest grossing opening for a film directed by a woman. You can read our review by clicking this link.
The other movie that opened in multiple theaters made a respectable $23 million. That would be the animated film Captain Underpants. The rest of the top five are listed below. Pirates of the Caribbean has now passed $500 million world wide while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 may not make it to the billion mark after all as it sits at $816 million.
Weekend Top Five
5. Baywatch $8.5 million
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 $9.7 million
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales $21.6 million
2. Captain Underpants- $ 23 million
1. Wonder Woman- $100 million
Next weekend the large movies include the Universal reboot The Mummy with Tom Cruise, It Comes At Night, and Megen Leavey. I don’t see any of these movies taking the top spot from Wonder Woman. Now that the movie is getting great reviews it can last at the box office longer than Baywatch or King Arthur. Some of the newer trailers include Baby Driver, Murder on the Orient Express, and a red band trailer for The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Enjoy the cool theater now that the sweltering summer heat is here ahead of schedule .
