With updates about superhero movies pouring out on a daily basis, whether about Spiderman or Justice League or Guardians, it can be difficult for the TV shows to get a look-in. One show with no such issue is Netflix’s The Defenders. After five seasons of admittedly varying quality, the greatest heroes of New York will be teaming up to save the city once more. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist will join forces to tackle Sigourney Weaver’s mysterious Alexandra, about whom little is currently known.
After a short announcement video last year, Netflix have released the first teaser for the series under the title “Midland Circle Security Elevator B.” As if in response to the backlash surrounding trailers giving away too much these days, it is only a sixteen second clip. Check it out below.
As you can see from the video, the team are in an elevator and definitely looking worse for wear. Luke Cage has been riddled with bullets and Daredevil and Iron Fist are puffing and panting just a bit (Work on the cardio guys come on!). This links into what showrunner Marco Ramirez mentioned back in January to Entertainment Weekly. He said that the team all individually follow clues that lead them to Midland Security (which popped up in Daredevil Season 2). A brawl ensues as expected.
Eagle-eyed viewers will have also noticed the date at which Jessica Jones dismantles the elevator’s security camera: 8/18/2017 – the premiere date for the new series.
As the marketing campaign begins for the new show, Marvel and Netflix have also created a website for the fictional New York Bulletin. It features covers harkening back to the previous series and one regarding Midland Security which may hint at what’s to come in The Defenders. Check out the website here.
After the marginal disappointment of Iron Fist, Marvel and Netflix will be hoping this 8-episode team up will right some wrongs and be the benchmark for superhero television shows once more.
The Defenders hits Netflix on August 18th 2017.
