The summer movie’s are starting to pick up some traction at the box office. After some dismal showings from Warcraft and Alice in Wonderland it did look like the summer box office just wouldn’t make a jump back. Thankfully movies like Finding Dory, Ghostbusters, Secret Life of Pets, Purge: Election Year, Conjuring 2, and Tarzan have helped the most.
This weekend saw the release of the much talked about reboot/sequel Ghostbusters being released. With an all female lead cast including Kirsten Wigg and Melissa McCarthy most people really just wanted to trash this movie before it was released. Thankfully the movie did garnish some great reviews even becoming certified fresh at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ghostbusters was unable to break over $50 million in it’s opening weekend only bringing in $46 million. Secret Life still maintained the top spot with that cool $50 million mark, dropping over 50% from it’s opening weekend.
I do remember last week saying that Ghostbusters would take the top spot with over $40 million being made this weekend. I can see that I was actually half right. Check out the list of the top weekend movies.
Top Weekend Movies
- Secret Life of Pets – $50 million
- Ghostbusters – $46 million
- The Legend of Tarzan- $11.1 million
- Finding Dory – $11 million
- Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates- $ 7.5 million
This coming weekend will see the release of three movies. Ice Age: Collision Course, Star Trek: Beyond, and Lights Out. The top spot for next week should be taken by the new Star Trek; if it can beat out completion from these animated movies.
