Immortal: Unchained is a hardcore action RPG which is set within a dark, sci-fi universe. Created by Toadman Interactive this unique take on a well-known sub-genre has the feel of a sci-fi ‘souls-like’ thanks to its blend of third-person shooting and hardcore RPG element.
Immortal: Unchained is set within a futuristic fantasy world which is collapsing under an unknown cosmic event. As the embodiment of a living weapon it is your responsibility to bring an end to this cataclysm. Game writing veterans Anne Toole (The Witcher) and Adrian Vershinin (Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield: 1) also form part of the studio’s impressive narrative team.
The story of Immortal: Unchained caters to a variety of play styles thanks to its lack of force-fed plot. The game is designed in a way that those who just want to get straight into the action aren’t hampered by an over-arching plot – however if you’re a fan of uncovering mystery you’ll have to make a conscious effort in order to uncover the plethora of untold stories lurking beneath the surface.
“The game’s central character is unwillingly unchained and released by the warden. Given only the instruction that time is running out for the world and that your skills are now needed, you must set off with no memory of who you are or what you do, and find any information you can from the game and the characters you meet. However, the truth is not always clear as characters will always put their own agenda first, and discovering the truth is just as much a challenge as the gameplay and just as much of a reward.”
Survive a futuristic warzone and save the world from impending cataclysm – Sebastian Thorwaldsson (Game Deigner)
Within the game you are protected by a mysterious structure known as the Monolith, which oversees the flow of the cosmos. This ancient source of power has the ability to resurrect you when you die but you’ll have to re-collect your lost bounty from where you were defeated. This allows a pattern to emerge where you’ll inevitably be killed but you’ll learn from your mistakes – the death life-cycle is a key pillar of the game.
Unlike Dark Souls, guns, as opposed to swords and axes form the main component of combat within Immortal: Unchained. Combat will take place within close-to medium range encounters and players will have to execute excellent mobility in the way of well timed dodges and accurate attack direction if they’re to come out on top.
