A recent interview with IGN dropped hints about new designs for the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons. The Entertainment Planning and Development Division manager for Nintendo, Shinya Takahashi, talked about the wide array of customized Joy-Cons already out there and suggested that Nintendo may release some of their own redesigned controllers for the Nintendo Switch – or possibly brand new devices that could attach to Nintendo’s hybrid console.
“One of the great strengths of the Nintendo Switch is that though you can play it as a console, you can also separate these two controllers from the hardware. This gives us a lot of possibilities that we could consider for the future in terms of what you could attach. I think that that would be a really good time for us to think about some very different colors or designs applied to [the controllersJoy-Cons],” said Takahashi.
It’s vague and it could be that Takahashi merely meant limited edition Joy-Cons. We’ve seen literally dozens of limited edition 3DS designs but his words sound as if Nintendo is considering specialized controllers that could replace the stock Joy-Cons.
This does beg the question, what kind of specialized controllers might be good for the Switch. They would still have to be small enough to attach to the sides of the device.
What do you think?
