Did you think a year would pass by without a Skylanders game? There’s some serious non-Call of Duty money to be made here, you know! Activision surely knows that!
The latest game in the franchise has recently been revealed at an event in London, labeled “Skylanders Imaginators“. The main hook this time is the ability to create your own Skylanders character via a “Creation Crystal” the player places on the Portal of Power. Players will get to use a robust designer tool for various aspects of the custom character and more parts could be discovered during the main campaign.
How this fares against the typical toys-to-life premise the series thrives on will be a mystery for now, but there will still be twenty “Sensei” Skylander figures to coincide with the game regardless, and of course, all previous character figures can still be used with this game.
The trailer shows the starter pack boxes for the Xbox One and Playstation 4 versions, but Gen 7 and Nintendo owners need not worry; the game will also be coming to the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii U (and the Sky-miibo Bowser and Donkey Kong figures will be compatible, although we don’t know if there’ll be new ones).
Interestingly, there is not yet word of whether or not there will be a counterpart for the Nintendo 3DS or Wii. Last year’s Skylanders Superchargers made a compromise on those platforms by being made up of only its racing gameplay (which I personally thought made the experience a lot more fun, but I digress), so there’s a chance that if Imaginators is arriving to Wii or 3DS, it may be a specified version built for them announced later on down the road.
The game will be released on October 16th for North America, and the 14th for European territories.
