People just love predicting the end of superhero movies and rest assured we will not be reporting on everyone who does. However recently director Steven Spielberg drew some interesting comparisons between the superhero genre and another old Hollywood genre that was since died the death. Westerns were popular throughout the 20th century and especially in the 1950s and 60s.
“We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western.”
According to the three time Academy Award winner we will all eventually just loose interest in the superhero genre. He added in his interview with Yahoo News that:
“These cycles have a finite time in popular culture. There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”
Not long ago Spielberg expressed concern over the climbing budgets of modern blockbusters. Marvel Studios will in 2016 begin ‘Phase 3’ of their Marvel Cinematic Universe that’ll see Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) introduced as well as Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Spider-Man following at later dates. 2016 will also bring Suicide Squad (directed by David Ayer) and the superhero flick titans Batman v.s Superman and Captain America: Civil War to screens.
It’s hard to say whether we will one day tire of hero films. At least in the near future, it’s safe to say that they will be major sources of income for Hollywood studios. What do you think? When do you predict the Superhero-Doomsday? For more movie, TV and gaming news stick right here with TiCGN!
