I understand that this was graduation weekend and plenty of people had parties and other functions to attend. Those people were not going to the movies to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The sequel to the 2014 hit only scored $35 million in its first domestic weekend. As most summer movies have a budget over $100 million it will be difficult to recoup that money if the film continues to do poorly.

Also this weekend X-Men Apocalypse made a small fortune with its debut in China. X-Men made over $59 Million in the first weekend on that side of the world.  Even in the states X-Men almost topped TMNT with $22 million in ticket sales. The X-Men box office total is currently at $402 million and it looks like the movie will be slowing down with releases like Warcraft, Finding Dory, and Independence Day Resurgence coming in the next few weeks.

The hit Disney animated feature Zootopia has become the second movie to cross $1 billion is sales this year. It is right on the heels of Captain America: Civil War.  It just seems that these sequels are just not what the audience wants right now. Let us know if you like the new TMNT movie in the comment section below.
