Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is literally right around the corner and there is so much hype surrounding this game that at this point it is time to show and prove. Much of the hype is being created by Sony as this is the biggest marketing push they have ever put into a game. It is clear that Sony is banking on Uncharted 4 being a huge success and looking for it to be the most successful PS4 exclusive released to date. Whether you are new to the series or a long time fan, I feel there are a lot of reasons to be excited for this game, but for the sake of time let’s focus on my top five (in no particular order).
1.DEEPER AND MORE MEANINGFUL STORY
The team at Naughty Dog have stated time and time again that this will be the most meaningful and by far deepest story in an Uncharted game. They are committed to bringing you closer to Nathan Drake than ever before and revealing more about his past, present, and future. This is very intriguing as fans of the series have an attachment to Drake and it is going to be very interesting to really see what makes him tick besides the outward appearance that has mostly been portrayed; which is he is an adventure addicted to the thrill of treasure hunting. Naughty Dog is also throwing a bit of a twist in this installment by adding dialog options which is not anything we haven’t seen before in a game but definitely a first for an Uncharted game and it is most welcome. I am also really looking forward to discovering more about Drake’s past and more details about his relationship between him and his mysterious brother Sam. What secrets does the Drake family hold? Last but not least, this is the end of Nathan Drake’s story! We have the pleasure of witnessing how Naughty Dog plans to rap up this great series. I am anticipating that we will get closure on the lives of our favorite characters such as; Sully, Elena, and Chloe. One truly important thing to note is that Naughty Dog has stated that they have learned a lot about how to properly tell a story from games like The Last of Us. That statement alone gives the indication that this could possibly be one of the best stories told in gaming.
2. MOST NON LINEAR UNCHARTED TO DATE
The Uncharted games have been strictly linear which is not a bad thing at all. At its core is not only a great story with charismatic characters, but it is about treasure hunting and the thrill of the hunt. Uncharted has always been littered with hidden secrets, puzzles, and treasure which kept the games fresh and helped keep the player on their toes. This time Naughty Dog is upping the anti by allowing you to venture off the beaten path which gives you options to approach certain scenarios from different perspectives. In a fire fight instead of attacking head on as in previous games you will be allowed to survey a more broad landscape and be as creative as you like to overcome the enemies standing in your way. Flank like you’ve never been able to before, traverse across the landscape and discover new areas that may lead you to different encounters that you may have not faced if you had not taken the time to explore. Oh yes, this is going to be different for sure.
It has been demonstrated time and time again that Naughty Dog is known for pushing the PlayStation hardware to its max! From the first Uncharted to the latest they have been pushing the boundaries of what was once thought impossible and made it look too easy. From what we’ve seen so far this installment will be no different. Make no mistake I am not talking about resolution, I’m talking about graphics. The character models are so detailed that when the characters make facial expressions you can see right into their hearts to the point they don’t have to use words for you to tell what is on their minds. The landscapes are simply incredible boasting photo realistic textures and outstanding draw distances. Oh and that water, that crystal clear, fluid water that was shown in one of the most recent trailers was absolutely amazing. It is all too clear that Naughty Dog will be flexing their creative muscles in Uncharted 4.
4. SMART AI
This may seem petty to some, but intelligent AI is really something to brag on. Part of the appeal of a true “next gen” experience is intelligent and capable AI, enemies and friendlies alike. All too often we measure what a true “next gen” experience should look like by visuals alone, but never really being too concerned with how lackluster the AI truly is in most of these games. Naughty Dog yet again is committed to excellence by promising that the enemies you face will respond and interact with you in a very realistic manner. Enemies will no longer automatically know your position when you enter a room and if you are exposed you will have opportunities to get out of their line of sight in which case they will truly loose you but will be committed to tracking you down based on your last known location. They will also not systematically follow the same patrol patterns either, you will be required to truly be on your toes and approach each encounter carefully or expect to be punished for your arrogance.
5. BLOCKBUSTER ACTION LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN!
A high level of action in an Uncharted game is nothing new. In Uncharted we have experienced some of the most thrilling action sequences not only in a game, but that even rival and in some cases top many action movies. Uncharted 4 looks as if it will set the bar once again. The extended trailer we saw after E3 2015 in my opinion has not been topped by any other game trailer shown to date. The extended trailer revealed the updates in the gun play which appears to be tighter, more realistic, and more aggressive than ever before. Bullets decimating Drake’s cover causing detailed particles to fly through the air while he traverses over the destroyed cover on top of awnings giving him a much needed vantage point to strike down enemies from above with a new aerial finishing move. Then he proceeds to hop into a jeep with Sully as they’re being chased down by a heavily armed truck through a populated city crushing everything in their path while hoping not to be crushed by the impending danger. Then Drake uses his new grappling hook to launch himself from the jeep on to a convoy of enemy vehicles which literally drags him through the mud as he seeks to aide his brother Sam who is riding on a motorcycle. As Drake is being drug by this truck he must somehow avoid enemy fire and shoot enemies who are pursing via motorcycle and truck. He then hops from truck to truck fist fighting enemies and shooting enemy vehicles causing insane destruction until he finally escapes with his brother. This sequence right here was by far one of the best moments I have ever seen in a game and this was just a small taste of what we can expect from the full game. I am definitely looking forward to even greater moments than this and you should be too.
My fellow gamers, as a community we tend to hype up games and in some cases we get so excited only to be disappointed. I truly believe Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will deliver on its promise to bring us the greatest action game to date while delivering a deeper, more meaningful story. Naughty Dog as a developer has a great track record and have assured us that we will not be disappointed. The hype is real but is it valid? I can’t wait to find out and experience the last chapter in the Nathan Drake saga myself on May 10, 2016!
