The latest Japanese trailer for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux inexplicably contained footage of a 2D platformer. Now Atlus has revealed that the game is a real thing from Den-fami Nico Game Magazine’s Ladybug team. Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue is a free platformer featuring franchise mascots Jack Frost and Pyro Jack as protagonists. However, the game will only be available until Christmas Eve.
While the game is in Japanese, it is perfectly playable without knowledge of the language. I tried it out myself and enjoyed it quite a bit despite not understanding any of the story. The game does not have any voice acting, so those who do want to experience the story will need to be able to read the text.
In this game, players can switch between Jack Frost and Pyro Jack as they navigate a labyrinthine world and fight familiar SMT demons. Each protagonist has their own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities. For example, Pyro Jack can float over obstacles while Jack Frost can freeze water. They are also capable of nullifying damage from their own element. Of course, enemies have elemental strengths and weaknesses as well.
In addition to enemies, the world is also full of puzzles. Those who explore areas thoroughly may find useful upgrades and skills here and there. The game also contains a few warp points which is convenient when traveling to past areas with new abilities.
