The Iron Lords Podcast team has returned from the realm of PAX East 2018! My first PAX is in the books and it was a fantastic experience. We saw and played so many great heavy hitting games that were impressive (State Of Decay 2, Ashen, Code Vein) as well as many smaller indie titles (Below) that really surprised. Here are some additional standout titles from PAX East 2018 the Lords recommend you keep an eye on this year!
PAX East 2018: 10 Games the Iron Lords Recommend You Keep an Eye On
Fox N Forests
This 2D 16-Bit action platformer from Bonus Level Entertainment/EuroVideo really surprised us with its charm and homage to classic SNES titles! Fox N Forests is set within a mystic forest and empowers you to switch weather seasons on the fly. The game also supports both RPG and hardcore puzzle elements.
It was an absolute pleasure for ILP to interview Game Director Rupert Ochsner regarding his latest project, and his passion for this game really shines through.
Fox N Forrests is set to release in Spring 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
As most of you are already aware, Lord Cognito is a sucker for a good ninja game. After going hands on with The Messenger from Sabotage Studios/Devolver Digital, I think his ninja nostalgia and platforming needs will all be satisfied very soon.
The Messenger is first presented as an 8-bit action platformer with a simple story only to turn into a very cool time travelling tale. The game then reveals itself as 16-bit Metroidvania packed with upgraded visuals, crazy bosses, cooler abilities, and great replay value. We love the vision Creative Director Thierry Boulanger has for this title so far and it shows in his interview with ILP!
The Messenger is set to release late summer on Nintendo Switch and PC.
If the lengthy lines by PAX fans weren’t enough reason to convince you to play SCUM from Gamepires/Croteam/Devolver Digital, maybe some gameplay details will help. SCUM provides hardcore survival sandbox gameplay in a stunning graphical package. This title also showcases extremely special PvP events where players can elect to participate for a chance at victory, top tier gear, and fame – the game’s meta currency.
SCUM will support a single player campaign, a full weather cycle, and some of the deepest levels of character vitals we’ve ever seen. Gamepires Technical Director Andrej Levenski definitely has us convinced so far!
SCUM is set to release in 2018 on PC.
The Lords are always inspired by medieval European history, and Ancestors Legacy by Destructive Creations/1C seems to hit that mark well. Squad-based real time strategy with a strong focus on tactics and outstanding close combat cinematic action utilizing Unreal Engine 4.
Take command of an entire army as you storm through medieval Europe in a series of single player campaigns. Choosing one of the four available nations – Viking, Anglo-Saxon, German, Slav – you will be tasked with conquering, raiding, and pillaging enemy camps, villages and towns. There is also very cool multiplayer component (1v1, 2v2, 3v3) or as a solo player you can team with the AI vs other players! Xbox One X 4K Enhanced support, HDR, and Cross platform play with PC is also in the works. Check out this amazing trailer of the game here.
Ancestors Legacy releases on PC May 22nd and Xbox One early 2019.

What if Zelda: Breath of The Wild and Dark Souls had a love child utilizing the Unity Engine? Action RPG Decay Of Logos by Amplify Creations/RisingStarGames may be the answer to this gaming question. You want competitive 3v3 tactical action where the invisible lead the charge against the invincible? Aftercharge from Chainsawesome Games may have you covered and then some. This unique asymmetrical online team game pits invisible robots against a squad of specialized security enforcers in quick-paced skirmishes.
Each team also houses multiple classes to choose from, and must use neutral extractors across the map as a key resource. The game runs at 60FPS across all platforms, free updates, no microtransactions, and even supports optional Cross Play between PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch! Check out the announcement trailer here.
Aftercharge is set to release 2018 on PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
I was very lucky to stumble upon one of the standout titles from the Pax Rising booth, the 2D Platform Action Adventure RPG Faeland from Talegames! This side scrolling, open world, Metroidvania exploration style feels like a love letter to the unique Zelda II (Adventure of Link) on the NES. However, beneath the surface there appears to be much more.
If the art style, narrative quest lines, dungeons, and epic boss battles weren’t enough, Developer Carlos Gonzalez’s passion is evident all over the 16-bit enhanced retro design here. The game is also part of the Square Enix Collective initiative and has received a whopping 93% vote tally!
Faeland’s Kickstarter campaign begins April 17th. The game is set to release on PC first, and then to all major consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Switch) in 2019.
I must admit, I had absolutely no idea how to define or what to expect when coming across Haimrik by Below The Game/1C. This game literally takes the expression “live by the pen, die by the sword” to the very next level! Every time I tried to box Haimrik into one specific genre (simple word puzzle platformer),the game kept adding more gameplay mechanics as it went on!
As the scribe with the power of words, you must navigate Haimrik in a medieval comedy full of dark humor and over-the-top cartoon violence! Below The Game CEO Carlos Rocha had us laughing hysterically at all the different things Haimrik has to deal with in this game. It’s a must see here!
Haimrik releases June 6th for Playstation 4 and Xbox One with an eventual release planned for the Nintendo Switch.
20XX from Batterystaple/Fire hose Games is exactly what a spiritual successor to Mega Man X should play like. 20XX supports full co-op (local and online), random levels, random powerups, and permadeath!
The game was an absolute blast to play with Designer Chris King, and the procedural level generation switches rapidly while playing! Precision jumping mixed with fevered combat all while leveling up skills earned from defeated bosses!
20XX is currently on Steam and is set to release this summer on PS4!
My Memory Of Us
My Memory of Us from Juggler Games definitely struck an emotional chord with me. Set in a world very similar to WWII, My Memory of Us tells the story of two children working together in the face of an invading force. Despite all of this both children manage to solve puzzles and still have fun.
My Memory of Us sports a very unique art style, has virtually no dialogue, yet manages to give the player subtle hints to solve the problems they face. The young girl seems to specialize in speed, while the young boy appears to be the more stealthier character based on his smaller stature. You can also “link” both characters with a hand holding mechanic where the lead character’s specialty can be utilized.
My Memory of Us is currently in Alpha and set to release in 2018 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
